Let's Paint - The Earth Elemental (RPG Mini Painting)

Last time I posted I finished the Reaper Bones Learn to Paint Kit by finishing the knight, Mangu Timur.  I recently received the second kit, Layer Up, but I wanted to wait until I finished all of the minis before posting about that.  In the meantime, let's look at this Earth Elemental from the Temple of Elemental Evil Board Game.


I actually quite like this guy.  He was technically the first miniature I painted without any color guide.  Not that his coloration is very difficult.  I did want to try to bring out a bit of warmth in him and mixed some tans into the grays.  He also was treated to a brown wash.  I really like how the wash sunk into the recesses and really gave this guy some depth.

I had given the base the same baking powder and super glue treatment I used on the skeletons and knight, but I still felt like it was lacking something so I added some stones.  The stones are actually ornamental glass that you can find in the gardening sections of craft stores.  They came gold and I had to paint them up by hand, which proved more time consuming than it was worth.  In the future I'll try to remember to add the stones before I've primed the mini.


In all, I really like this guy.  His contrast is well defined and he made for a fun encounter in game as the first painted-mini to make an appearance.

Let's Paint - Snakes! (RPG Mini Painting)

Snakes... Why did it have to be snakes? With my own D&D party adventuring into dangerous swamp territory, I was desperately in need of some slippery creatures to pit them against.  The vision of them entering the ruins of a city sunken deep into a mud pit just wasn't complete without snakes.  I sorted through my boxes of minis and found some medium sized snakes from the Wrath of Ashardalon board game, as well as a large cobra from Reaper Bones.  But that didn't quite fit my swarms of serpents image.  I needed more.  I needed... well, swarms! Let's Paint - Yetis and Winter Wolf (RPG Mini Painting)

Winter Monsters Sorry for the hiatus.  My life has been quite busy lately and as a result, I haven't gotten the chance to paint or craft lately.  Additionally, my games have been repeatedly delayed.  Back at the end of February I promised some winter monsters.  But my party took a turn in their adventure and delayed their confrontation with Shiver the Ice Hag and her chilling minions.  Not wanting to ruin their reveal I waited.  But no more! This past Monday the party finally confronted Shiver, who was waiting for them to trade over a powerful magical item in exchange for the return of their companion.  When the party decided that she would be too dangerous with the artifact she summoned three yetis and nearly wiped the party. Let's Paint - Wolves (RPG Mini Painting)

Last time we painted up an Earth Elemental from the Temple of Elemental Evil Board Game.   This week the board game painting continues with a trio of wolves from the Castle Ravenloft Board Game. I continued my journey of painting miniatures with no guide by painting up these wolves.  In the weekly game I run, our party has a ranger with a wolf companion, and a druid who often wild-shapes into a wolf.  Because of this I felt that the wolves would make a great addition to the table. I started by searching images of painted wolf minis to see what others had done, but I was unsatisfied with a lot of the solid-colored wolves.  I quickly abandoned the mini search in favor of using reference images of actual wolves.  I really wanted to capture the shift of color from dark to light in the fur.
